I had a conversation with a co-worker yesterday about jobs, degrees, and money. The conversation left me feeling empty...but only for a moment. The co-worker went on about how I need to have a degree to make lots of money and that the job I am at, isn't giving me the "experience" I will need to make more money and blah blah. He also said he didn't understand why I was taking all these art classes, " I mean, do they count toward anything?" he asked. "sure" I replied, "a degree with an emphasis on art" wtf. I felt bad that I only make x amount of dollars and don't use my brain enough at work.
The truth is that at that moment, I forgot who I was and got caught up in this world of having money and being "successful". That is so not what I am about. I am about making art, thinking and enjoying the life I have been given. If I was concerned about any of the crap that guy was saying, I doubt I would be doing what I am doing. To me, success is having a clean house and a couple of kids to raise. It is also about getting outside and breathing the fresh air once in a while. If I am able to teach one person one thing about how to look at the world differently, I have succeeded. I don't need money to justify what I do. I just need happiness. That is not to say that I don't rely heavily on my paycheck. I just don't make what I do for 40 hours a week define who I am, and I certainly do not evaluate my self worth based on what I do for a living. What kind of life would that be?

Zoma
