Line Drawings and Facing the Brutal Facts

My shadow on the secret beach 2012

My latest project involves  a blank 200 page sketchbook and a fine point black pen.  I am going to fill it cover to cover with line drawings.

For my first series of subject matter, I chose animals and insects.  I immediately became bored with these subjects and started to modify them into little fictional creatures.  The creatures are great, but the fact I need to face is that my skills are not where they need to be and the only way I am going to improve them is if I draw what I see.

Looking at the subject matter is critical in any drawing.  With line drawing, studying the subject is especially critical due to the simplistic style.  Drawing in ink with a single line is absolutely unforgiving.  I realize that I need to be patient and spend more time looking than I do drawing, but I still struggle to do so.

Drawing and running are the same to me.  When I start to get uncomfortable and frustrated, I push myself to keep going because in a couple of minutes, I know that I am going to feel really good. The few minutes I spend suffering are always worth working through.

Drawing and running are both things that I thought I could never do when I was a child. Thankfully, I have had some key people come in and out of my life who remind me to keep going, keep learning and never stop growing.  They are important people who always bring me an unforgettable message.
