I believe that good art comes from pain. When we are unhappy, we search for the meaning of things; our lives, our words, our expressions. We realize, or feel that we are alone, and may as well do as we please. We are then free to express ourselves without fear. When you've already been rejected, what is there to fear?
As I explore this idea, I recall a time when I was too young to really be on my own, fending for myself. I remember writing in my journal daily. I made and studied more art in those years than I have in all other years combined.
I did a lot of looking inward. I studied myself. I wrote a lot about people who were not close to me. I wrote about wanting my opinion to matter and wanting a home. I can see in my artwork that I was in a different place back then. Perhaps a place I never want to be again, but do not regret passing through.
